4 Sep: New appointments to the Multi-region Ethics Committee
Mr Richman Wee has been appointed Chairperson of the Multi-region Ethics Committee by the Minister of Health. Mr Hector Matthews has been appointed as a community member, Maori.
Our thanks to Dr Barry Smith for his long and dedicated service to the Multi-region Ethics Committee, particularly over the past 14 months when he has been acting Chairperson.

6 Aug: Delivering Applications to the Upper South Committees
There is no longer a receptionist at the Christchurch office, level 4, 250 Oxford Terrace, to receive applications. A 'drop box' system is in operation. The dimensions of the drop box are 46cm by 20cm. If you do not wish to leave a larger box/package in the public foyer area, please ensure that it is in packages that will fit into the drop box.

8 Apr: National Application Form for Ethical Approval of a Research Project-2009-v1
The 2009 version of the National Application Form for Ethical Approval of a Research Project is now available. The 2005 version will be accepted until 30 September 2009. Researchers may be asked, however, to resubmit the compensation declaration form B if it is not the 2009 version and provide other documentation requested in the application form 2009-v1. The committees would like to thank researchers and organisations for their input into the process.
Note:
a checklist is to be attached to the front of each application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Pending is an option only for written confirmation of Maori consultation, SCOTT approval, and Locality assessment by organisation. For multi-region studies, the documentation for one site must be complete.

23 Feb: Administrator Changes for the Lower South and Multi-region Ethics Committees
We sadly farewell Riria Tautau-Grant, Lower South Regional Ethics Committee Administrator, and Annisha Vasutavan, Multi-region Ethics Committee Administrator.

18 Feb: Change of agenda closing date for Lower South Regional Ethics Committee on 3 March
Please note a new agenda closing time and date for the 3 March meeting of the Lower South Regional Ethics Committee to 3pm on 20 February. This is to enable the applications to be processed in Christchurch and distributed in time for members to read the agenda prior to the meeting.

21 Aug: New Terms of Reference for the Health and Disability Ethics Committees
Changes to the committees' terms of reference:
1. While the Committees' primary responsibility for applications within their jurisdiction remains unchanged, any other regional ethics committee or the Multi-region Ethics Committee may now, if it has capacity, review multi-region and national health and disability research or research from any region.
2. Committees may choose to elect a second Deputy Chairperson. The second Deputy Chairperson may either be a health professional or a lay member.
3. The Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons may claim an allowance of up to four days per month for additional work between meetings.
4. Committee decisions may be reviewed by the Health Research Council Ethics Committee under the Health Research Council Act 1990.
Please note that applications must still be submitted to the Multi-region Ethics Committee if it is national or multi-regional research or the appropriate regional ethics committee. If an application is unable to be heard at the meeting for which it was submitted, researchers will be advised and offered the opportunity for their application to be considered by another committee if there is capacity or alternatively, applicants may prefer to be given priority on the next agenda for the committee to which it was submitted. Only complete applications, ie with only confirmation of Māori consultation, locality assessment by organisation and SCOTT pending, will be accepted on to an agenda.

The Administrator, Amrita Kuruvilla will be on leave from 21 August until 29 September. The committee administration will be covered by other ethics committee administrators during her absence. The Multi-region Ethics Committee's 19 August meeting will be held in the Ministry of Health office, 229 Moray Place, Dunedin.
30 July: Central Regional Ethics Committee Administration
Jiska van Bruggen has taken up a new role. A new appointment is pending for the Administrator, Central Regional Ethics Committee. In the interim, the Central Regional Ethics Committee email and phone will be continue to be monitored by the ethics administration team, including temporary administrator, Martin Dutton.

18 Dec: Meetings in January
The Multi-region Ethics Committee will meet on 22 January. The agenda closing date for this meeting is 7 January.
Northern Y Regional Ethics Committee will meet on 29 January if sufficient applications are received. The agenda closing date is 11 January.
Upper South A Regional Ethics Committee will meet on 21 January is sufficient applications are received. The agenda closing date is 7 January.
If the above meetings are not held, any applications received will be transferred respectively to the Northern X and Upper South B Regional Ethics Committee agendas.
