About the Committees

New Zealand has seven ethics committees, which were established under the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000.

The primary role of the committees is to provide independent ethical review of health and disability research and innovative practice to safeguard the rights, health and wellbeing of consumers and research participants, in particular, those with diminished autonomy. The committees’ terms of reference set out how the committees will carry this out.

In this section you can access information about each ethics committee, including contact details, jurisdiction, terms of reference, membership, meeting dates and minutes.

To find out more about the role of ethics committees and the ethical review system, see Ethical review in New Zealand.

Each ethics committee considers applications for research that is to be performed within their particular jurisdiction. If you are unsure which committee you should send your research proposal to, contact the National Co-ordinator.
